Calypso
It is at least extraordinary that a country which, over the past three decades, warmly embraced foreign-language music like
"Oye Como Va", "The Click Song", "Sayonara" and "Kuch Gadbad Hai", could today generate arguments against young soca singers based on inability to decipher their lyrics, that predicament often a casualty of unwillingness to listen; some even finding such a proviso impertinent. Infusion of Jamaican slang by new wave singers is separately upsetting to calypso purists, who accuse them of supporting alien culture, as if Sparrow never sang "Calypso Twist" and Kitchener hadn't recorded "1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 Bump", an equally pathetic attempt at mimicking American pop music.
Soca
Like all other music, people have experimented with soca over the years to produce hybrids such as ragga soca, chutney soca and even soca parang. Some of the great soca artistes are Machel Montano, Shadow and Super Blue, whose music is now internationally known and who have allowed Trinidadian artistes to become recognised as international entertainers.Soca is the staple of the Road March, which is the song played the most times on the road on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. It is also the song played most often by DJs on the radio and in fetes (parties) leading up to carnival.
• Ras Shorty I - Endless Vibrations
• Machel Montano - Toro Toro
• Denise Belfon - Buss dem up
• Iwer George - Carnival come back again

Steelpan
The drum has always played an important role in the cultural life of both Africans and Asians. Throughout the history of the carnival the drum has held a significant place. It was used as a means of communication and a symbol of freedom. On Jouvay morning 120 pan beaters would parade down the street for the roadmarch, today the government has restricted it to 100. This symbolic instrument takes many forms in the history of Black people, and is always central to their development as it is the heart and spirit of the people.
Steelpan was introduced to carnival around 1935 replacing both the tamboo bands and the Calypso string bands. The islands in the Caribbean which were the most pro-active in developing this new musical form were Trinidad & Tobago, Antigua and St. Kitts Nevis.
This innovative approach to the music of carnival and the introduction of biscuit tins and dustbins began in the late 1930s. The rhythm and energy created by this addition to the carnival inspired the maskers who developed their characters and movement to complement this new and inspiring musical sound.
Samba A dance and type of music from Brazil originating from African slaves. The dance is very difficult as performed by Brazilians in comparison to formal "ballroom" dancing which is highly stylized. Men and women dance samba differently and together yet without touching. The dance for the women can be characterized as quick symmetrical feet movement with each foot twisting on the heel. This foot movement is accompanied by hip and shoulder gyrations creating a dance that agitates the entire body. Men also perform the same foot motion but not accompanied by violent hip and should gyrations. Men dance around the women incorporating hops, jumps, and spins often accompanied by slapping of the hand on the heels.Samba music is in 2/4 time (in two) with a high bass drum beat on the first beat, and the lower foundation beat on the second beat. The lower second beat must be the same or of lesser intensity than the first higher beat.
